When choosing ski pants there are a number of factors to consider that will ensure maximum comfort and enjoyment. These include the conditions you’ll be facing, your experience level, what you need to carry and how you want your ski pants to look. You also need to decide your budget and think about how often you plan to ski in the future. Ski pants are available in a range of different styles, waterproof ratings and prices so you can choose the right pair for you.
Types of Ski Pants
Ski pants can be made of many different types of fabric that affect the look, feel and often the waterproofness of the trousers. The type of skiing you will be doing will effect what ski pants will be most suitable.
●Insulated Ski Pants: Insulated ski pants consist of a waterproof “shell” outer layer with an inner insulated layer. The level of insulation will vary between different ski pants.
●Softshell Ski Pants:Softshell ski pants are made from a soft stretch woven fabric. Softshell ski pants will offer a greater freedom of movement and are highly breathable as well as being water resistant. For these reasons they are well suited if you are particularly energetic on the slopes. They are also more suited if conditions are likely to be relatively dry.
●Hardshell Ski Pants: Hardshell ski pants offer taped seams and should be fully waterproof. These ski pants may be better suited to you if you are expecting wet conditions.
Waterproofing
For a pair of ski pants to be considered waterproof they need to have a hydrostatic head rating of at least 1500mm and have taped seams. The waterproofness of ski pants is measured using a hydrostatic head test. In this test the fabric is pulled tightly over a sealed tube and the machine applies and increases water pressure that pushes against the fabric to determine the hydrostatic rating of how much the fabric and seams can withstand before the water starts to penetrate. The higher the rating the better the level of protection.
Breathability
How breathable your ski pants are can be an important factor in picking the best pair for you as just like any exercise, skiing or snowboarding can cause you to get hot and sweaty. Breathable garments let small water vapour molecules pass through it while still ensuring the protective barrier stops water droplets (such as rain) from reaching your base layers. Breathability is measured in ‘Moisture Vapour Transfer’ and relates to how much vapour can pass through the garment in a 24 hour period, the higher the number, the better the breathability.
Important Ski Pant Features
When choosing your Ski pants, look out for these features which can help improve your comfort and enhance your enjoyment.
●Leg Gaiter: Leg gaiters help to keep snow from entering up your ski pant opening, keeping your feet and legs dry
●Zipped Pockets: Zipped pockets will allow you to keep anything you need to carry secure on the slopes.
●Stretch Fabric: Maximises mobility and freedom of movement.
●Waist Adjusters: Waist adjusters will allow you to ensure your ski pants fit perfectly.
●Thigh Venting: Mesh lined venting allows for adjustable temperature control and ventilation.
●Anti-Abrasive Reinforcement: The hem of the pant will be reinforced with anti-abrasive material to increase durability and to limit wear and tear from friction.
Ski Pants Buying Guide
Ski Pant Style
●Slim Fit
A flattering close fitting look for those who want to minimise bulk & reap the benefits of stretch fabrics.
●Regular Fit
The most standard fit option, often featuring a slightly tapered boot cut shape, with space for layers and freedom of movement.
●Relaxed Fit
A relaxed look with plenty of room to move and layer up on colder days. Often with more stash pockets practical for all mountain adventures.
Ski Pant Type
●Shell
Focused on waterproof, breathability and durability; shell trousers are great for freeriders looking to explore the whole mountain. It’s best to invest in a variety of weights of base-layer thermals to ensure you are covered for colder temperatures.
●Insulated
A reliable choice for the majority of skiers, but especially those new to the mountains. Providing ample warmth for colder conditions with just a light base-layer thermal. Review the different levels of ventilation if you tend to ski later in the season.
●Softshell
Protective, high stretch fabric with a brushed fleece backer that’s ideal for dryer conditions. Close fitting silhouette provides flattering fit and minimises bulk, whilst providing maximum freedom of movement.
Additional Features
●Snow Gaiter
A snow gaiter is a waterproof seal, designed to fit around your ski boots to keep snow and water from entering. Gaiters might have hooks that connect to your ski boots' buckles for extra protection, and adjustable to ensure the right fit.
●Cuff Reinforcement
Unlike snowboard pants, ski pants are usually reinforced where the inner edge of the ski is likely to wear the fabric of the pants down. An extra-durable fabric is used to reinforce the cuffs and protect against contact with your ski edges and crampons.
●Vents
Some ski pants will have vents on the insides of the thighs for air circulation and temperature regulation. These will vary in material and length depending on what the pants are designed for. Technical backcountry ski pants will often have full-length side zips for maximum ventilation.
●Pockets
Different types of ski pants will have different numbers and styles of pockets, from baggy salopettes with cargo pockets to slim-fit pants with pockets only big enough for your ski pass.
Insulation: Ski pants are usually lined with insulating material to keep you warm in cold conditions. They trap body heat, preventing it from escaping, which is crucial when spending extended periods in low temperatures.
Water Resistance: Ski pants are made from materials that are typically waterproof or at least highly water-resistant. This is essential when you're skiing or snowboarding, as you'll be encountering a lot of snow which can melt and make your clothes wet, leading to discomfort and potential hypothermia.
Wind Resistance: The materials used in ski pants are usually wind-resistant, which can be a major advantage in windy weather on the slopes.
Durability: Ski pants are designed to withstand harsh conditions and are typically more robust than regular pants. This means they can endure the rigors of winter sports, like falls or contact with equipment, without tearing or getting damaged easily.

Breathability: Good quality ski pants are not only waterproof but also breathable. This is important because physical activity produces sweat, and without breathability, moisture can build up inside your pants, leading to discomfort and a drop in body temperature.
Mobility and Comfort: Ski pants are usually designed with the flexibility needed for winter sports in mind. They allow for a wide range of motion, which is critical for activities like skiing and snowboarding. They often include features like articulated knees or gussets for increased comfort and mobility.
Safety Features: Some ski pants come with added safety features like padding for falls, reflectivity for visibility, and even RECCO reflectors that can help rescuers locate you in case of an avalanche.
Pockets and Extras: Ski pants often have specific pockets for gear like ski passes, gloves, or goggles. Some designs also include vents for temperature regulation, adjustable waistbands, or built-in gaiters to keep snow out of your boots.
The Importance of Ski Pants
Weather Protection
The unforgiving alpine environment demands robust protection against cold temperatures, strong winds, and wet snow. Ski pants are crafted from high-quality, waterproof materials that act as a barrier against the elements. They keep you comfortably dry, allowing you to focus on perfecting your turns rather than worrying about the weather.
Insulation and Warmth
Skiing involves exposure to freezing temperatures, especially at higher altitudes. Ski pants are equipped with advanced insulation technologies, such as synthetic fibers or down, that trap heat close to your body. This ensures you stay warm and comfortable throughout your adventure, even in the most frigid conditions.
Mobility and Flexibility
Unlike standard pants, ski pants are designed with the skier's range of motion in mind. They incorporate features like articulated knees and stretch panels that allow for unrestricted movement. This flexibility is crucial for executing precise maneuvers, whether you're carving down groomed runs or navigating challenging backcountry terrain.
Ventilation and Breathability
Skiing is a dynamic sport, and as you push your limits, your body generates heat. Ski pants are equipped with ventilation systems, such as zippered vents, that allow excess heat and moisture to escape. This prevents overheating and maintains a comfortable microclimate inside the pants.
Criteria For Choosing Ski Pants
A Good Relationship Between Impermeability And Breathability
Impermeability and breathability are among the main criteria to take into account when choosing your ski pants. Waterproofness is measured in mm. In general, the recommended level is at least 10,000 mm.
Recommended Materials For The Efficiency Of Your Ski Pants
Nowadays, many ski garments are made from synthetic fabrics. Thanks to technological developments, skiers can benefit from a variety of technical fabrics that are highly effective for this sport. The aim of the manufacturers of these fabrics is to allow the skier to enjoy perfect comfort by providing outstanding protection from external coolness.
Versatility And Practicality
Whether it's accessories, zips, pockets, loops or leg rests, you must pay attention to all the little details. When you plan to do long-distance skiing, you will need to carry some accessories with you. In this case, the number of pockets becomes a determining factor in your choice of ski pants. With more pockets, you can easily carry small tools such as a compass, map, etc. On the other hand, opting for press studs will allow you to remove your ski pants, and put them back on again, with ease.
Suitable Underwear
During your skiing trip, you should ideally opt for the 3-layer method if you want to combat the intense cold and stay warm. For the lower part of the body, it’s important to use technical underwear in addition to your ski pants. Indeed, technical underwear in the form of mid-calf or long tights can protect you against humidity and cold. Made using special fabrics, these garments won’t impair your movement during sport.
The Cut
The cut of a pair of ski pants is a question of style as well as comfort. To fine-tune your choice, it’s important to avoid cuts that are too tight. Obviously, very tight cuts are an inconvenient factor, as they can lead to extremely annoying chafing. However, you should also avoid very loose cuts, as they can also decrease your dynamism when moving. In fact, the best models are equipped with a belt to adjust the cut. Make sure that the adjustment is optimised by taking all the above details into account.
